Kaala Climax: Why does it please everyone?

I was convinced of the fact that Kaala is dead after Haridada’s men set Dharavi on fire. Kaala, like a valiant man as shown throughout the movie, goes out and saves the people of Dharavi singlehandedly. Kaala is dead now(atleast to a neutral fan).

What we see next is Haridev Abhyankar(Nana Patekar) entering Dharavi to perform the ‘Bhoomi Puja’, to construct apartments by demolishing the makeshift houses in the slum. As he smells the sand of Dharavi, a young girl(deliberately clad in black) throws a ball of black sand towards Haridada. Now the whole of Dharavi  join the girl and wreck havoc by throwing around black coloured powder. As Haridada looks at the crowd and is trying to come to terms with what is happening around him, he sees Kaala emerging from amidst the crowd.

A neutral fan knows that Haridada is just hallucinating because he still cannot believe that Dharavi is revolting after Kaala’s demise. He is hallucinating images of Kaala because he still feels that Kaala is standing true to his word(Unnale oru piri mannu kooda kondu poga mudiyathu). This neutral fan understands what the director wants to convey in the climax.

Then come the, ‘Vaalavaikum Deivangal’, also known as- Fanboys. These people have seen their superstar emerging unscathed in bigger bomb blasts. They have seen him take on timeless(and better) villians like Mark Anthony and Neelambari. The climax is perceived as one where Kaala is still alive. When Kaala disappears suddenly and appears standing face to face with the villian, it is clear that he is hallucinating images of Kaala amidst the chaos.

It looks like this fact is not perceived well by fanboys. They just cannot see Rajnikanth dying in a movie. For others, it comes as a sigh of relief that the director has not bought into commercial elements and envisages the climax in the most logical and engaging way possible. Even the fanboys are happy with it because they witness the usual spectacle, that is, Rajnikanth pulverizing the antagonist in the climax.

Whatever Pa.Ranjith did wrong in Kabali has been corrected in Kaala. Logical climax, Check. Slow motion shots coupled with ear-piercing BGM, Check. More punch dialogues to the protagonist, Check. Comedy scenes keeping Rajnikanth at the forefront, Check.
All in all, this climax will be talked about for ages as to how it pleases every section of the audience.

Post Scriptum- This article does not defame fanboys in any way.
Fun Fact- I’m a huge fanboy myself.
