Cons of urbanisation

This phenomenon called Urbanisation promises a better life in cities. It would be very tempting ,to say the least, to leave villages/districts and settle in the dingy sub-urbs of cities. With this come a host of problems. Some known to all and some which are deliberately brushed under the carpet.
  • Population/Population Density.
When a family moves from a village and settles in a city and amasses huge amounts of wealth, it is nothing but natural for their relatives’ desire to emulate them. So, even they venture into the cities. Like this, the population of any city is always on the rise.
  • Depletion of Ground Water Level.
When the population density of a certain area is high, then even the water requirement of that area shoots up. Sometimes, it may be required to transport water from a nearby place to fill in the needs of the household in that area. This is because the ground water level of that region has gone down.
  • People deserting their primary occupations.
Some agrarians who aren’t satisfied with their income in villages settle in cities leaving their primary occupation aloof. We lose many farmers because of this. This translates to increase in the price of a particular crop because supply is reduced due to the loss of a single farmer.
When people try to follow suit, then the prices increase magnanimously. This burden has to be borne by both the urban and rural residents.
  • Pollution.
In big cities, there is a problem of pollution just because of the sheer magnitude of people trying to traverse from point A to point B. This contributes to pollution. We can also include industrial pollution by industries which are situated in the outskirts of cities.
  • Social Inequalities.
When a first generation graduate student studies in the same class as that of a businessman’s son who is a city dweller from long time, the former may get perturbed seeing the riches of the latter.
  • Racism and Prejudice.
The villager might be ridiculed for not being proficient in English. He/she may also be ridiculed for his/her dialect which is different than the other city dwellers. Hence this may create psychological problems for the person.
Based on the aforementioned cons, it can argued that urbanisation brings an equal number of problems compared to its advantages.
